Kontact is the KDE groupware client. They had a meeting at Linuxtag two or three years ago about how to improve the communication between the bits of KDE PIM. There was also a contact with three companies including KDAB by the German Computer Security Agency for a groupware client and server. When you start up Kontact you get the summary view. News, birthdays, appointments and Todos shown. They have a simple wizard to connect to the various possible groupware servers. It requires Kontact to be shut down to run. Demonstration of storing contacts on a standard IMAP server, uploads everything automatically, no need for a groupware server. Also works with Calendaring. Demonstration of a feature not in 3.3 where you can take any embarrassing photo and associate it with an address book entry, built in image selection lets you choose person's face. Demonstration of adding custom fields to a contact such as "No. of Beer required". Then a demonstration of creating a full custom page using QtDesigner so you can add whatever information you want to a contact. It's all standards compliant. Third party plugins are available such as Akregator the RSS program. SIP phone support is planned and in development as of yesterday. Question about integrating IRC. Will Stephenson made noises, he will demonstrate Kopete integration later today. Danimo says not everything needs to be integrated into one shell but if there is a bugs.kde.org entry with votes, or patches sent, it may get done. An audience member pointed out a favourite feature that you can right click on an e-mail and say "add to contacts". Danimo didn't know this but adds James Richard Taylor to his contacts and decides this is a cool feature. Point that there are other integrated groupware client things out there, how does this one compare. Kontact is missing mindshare for now, that needs to be built-up. Idea to search Google for images for contacts where there is no photos. Good idea especially since Google is our new technology partner seeking out new revenue streams.
